Did you ever just feel that no matter what you do road blocks are being thrown up in your face time and time again? You “feel” like your intuition is leading you down a certain path and then BOOM… the Universe hits you with a road block. So you go, “Hey shitty Road Block, I’m not gonna let you stop me, I’ll just bulldoze you over!” Or “Hey Road Block, you don’t fool me, I’m just gonna walk aaaaaalll the way around you!”
Only to be met by, you guessed it, another road block.
I can’t tell you how many times this has happened to me.
A million billion times.
And it is only looking back with hindsight that we can clearly see what was leading us there and why we were pushing so hard to create an outcome.
Hindsight is a fascinating thing.
-
understanding of a situation or event only after it has happened or developed.
“with hindsight, I should never have gone”
They say hindsight is 20/20, but why is that? Why can we not trust our intuition and instinct in the moment? What is it that is clouding our judgement so much that we refuse to see or can’t see that the path forward is just not meant for us?
There are several reasons why we may not listen to our intuition and therefore miss the path laid out before us:
- Lack of Trust: Some people may not trust their intuition and rely more on logic and rational thought. They may feel that their intuition is unreliable or that it cannot be trusted.
- Fear of Making Mistakes: Fear of making mistakes can prevent people from listening to their intuition. They may worry that following their intuition may lead to negative consequences, so they prefer to rely on more objective measures.
- Social Conditioning: Society often places more value on logic and rational thought than on intuition. As a result, some people may have been conditioned to ignore their intuition and to rely solely on objective measures.
- Overthinking: Overthinking and analyzing situations can also prevent people from listening to their intuition. They may become so caught up in analyzing the situation that they ignore their inner voice.
- Lack of Practice: Listening to intuition requires practice, and some people may not have developed the skill to do so effectively. With practice, however, people can learn to recognize and trust their intuition more readily.
As a result, if you believe in this sort of thing, The Universe or your higher self needs to – at times – create extremely strong and loud road blocks in our way in an effort to steer us in the right direction.
So, what do you do then when you get the sense that the Universe is saying “no” about a current situation in your life?
Well, you can stop all efforts and just WAIT and do nothing. See what comes up from that quiet of lack of motion. Sometimes when we take a pause that is enough to allow the answer to bubble to the surface. Or, you could get a reading of some kind or therapy. Either of these options allow a third party to help you – using tools like the tarot – to circumvent your logical brain and the inner critic and the ego to tap into the clear powerful voice of your own Wise Mind. You could also use what I like to call Deep Listening which you can read all about in a previous blog post HERE. Or you can simply plough ahead and see what happens. Sometimes it might work out, sometimes not, I have been known to pick this option on a number of occasions.
When to really stop all of the presses, though, and understand that The Universe or whatever that force is is indeed trying to stop you and steer you in another direction:
- Injury or illness – if your body is suddenly not well, even back pain or headaches, it is time for you to pay attention to where you are at in your life. Myself I pivot to the thing that feels most in alignment and pay attention to my body signals.
- People you love are reflecting back to you that you are “not happy” or “seem very stressed” – if you have people in your life that you love and trust they, at times, will have a better insight into your well being than you do. Pay attention when you hear people you trust in your life start to tell you they are worried about you.
- Other things keep pulling at you – those times when road blocks are happening over and over, pay attention to the things – sometimes one thing – that keep tugging at you persistently. It could be a nagging feeling or a “gut feeling” that keeps coming up. This is your intuition and “The Universe” trying to talk to you!
- Conflicts in your relationships – this one is a bit more nuanced but never-the-less no less powerful. When we are dragging ourselves down the wrong road the toll this can take on our psyche and very being has a direct affect on those around us. If you are generally unhappy because you can’t make a thing happen, it might not be your thing.
- Noticing feelings of envy or jealousy of others – another nuanced one but if you are moving down the wrong path and someone you know is moving down a different one and you start to think, “Dang it! I WANNA GO DOWN THAT PATH!” Then that is a HUGE HINT that that path is more in alignment with you and where you should be going.
All in all we all have experienced when we feel like The Universe is deliberately f-ing with us and foiling our plans at every turn, but like that Garth Brooks song says, “Thank God for unanswered prayers” because sometimes things are not meant for you, no matter how badly we think we want them.
If you are struggling with this in your life at all right now or in the future I can help! Reach out to inquire about readings or coaching with me and we can help you get clarity about your path together. One of the quickest ways to get answers on if a path is a yay or nay is a tarot reading or a coaching series so you don’t have to waste one more second of your precious life bulldozing road blocks out of the way down a path that was never meant for you.
And a final message from a colleague of mine, if things aren’t going your way try to remember this:
“Not rejected – redirected.”
LOVE. THIS.

I have been over here thinking about you and wondering something. Have you ever wanted to PLAY BIG in your life orwork? Have you ever wanted to feel more confident in everything you do or take bolder action and have a greater impact in the world through your work? Do you ever get tired of feeling “too old” or “too young” or “too lacking” in know how to do what you want to do? Are you exhausted with trying to please everyone else and you just want to do things for YOU for once in your life?
ME. TOO.
About eleven years ago I stumbled across the work of Tara Mohr. I was smack dab in the middle of a Dark Night of the Soul point in my life and she was literally one of the life lines that saved me back then. I took her course, applied all of the tools and then launched my business back in 2014. I now am a trained Playing Big Facilitator and use – and teach – the tools that I learned in Playing Big with all of my clients, students, and people in my life.
I occasionally still find myself wandering aimlessly in Playing Small so then I dust off my tools and apply them and VOILA… PLAYING BIG activates and me and my Wild Woman self are expanding and beaming light and lifting others along the way.
Use these tools when you are being called to do something outside your comfort zone and you are feeling TERRIFIED and even PARALYZED to make even a tiny step towards said thing.
If you relate to any of this, here are THREE TOOLS you can use TODAY to start playing big:
1. Get Curious: one of the very first tools you can implement is to get curious about the fear you are feeling. What is at the root of this fear? Do you feel like you don’t know enough? Do you feel like an imposter? Getting curious takes the charge out of the fear. It neutralizes it enough so that you can begin to manage the fear so that you can do the thing in spite of it.
2. Tap Into your Inner Mentor: I have a great guided meditation that I do with my workshop participants and my clients on how to visit your inner mentor – YOU 20 years into the future. There’s something very magical about visiting “future you” because they have already been through everything you are going through. They have 20 years of wisdom and they have 20 years of navigating life and work that they can share with you. It is an incredibly powerful exercise and will also neutralize the fear and make you feel quite fearless actually.
3. Reconnect with your Desire to Serve: This is such a huge one! I learned this from a few teachers along my journey of being an entrepreneur and just, well, being a person in the world. When we shift to being of service it takes the pressure off of us feeling like we have to perform. For example, if you wanted to be a public speaker and you want to start going to Toastmasters you might be terrified and your inner critic might be trying to stop you. This is a classic example of the inner saboteur or inner critic stopping you from playing big. If you shifted to a service mindset – in other words how can my speeches or my inspirational talks truly help others? If you really stay there in your intention suddenly it’s not a scary anymore because it’s not really about you! AMAZING!
These are just 3 tools from a loooooong list of others to help you and support your Playing Big Journey. If you are really ready to step into your true authentic self and are tired of you getting in your own way, I invite you to check out my readings AND/OR Playing Big Coaching. I have helped dozens of people to play big – become published best selling authors, become public speakers, launching successful businesses, leave unhappy relationships… you name it! Mystified by how to learn to read the tarot?
Are you fascinated with tarot cards but have no idea where to start? I mean, how the heck are you supposed to memorize the meanings of 78 cards and the endless combinations in spreads anyway?
You’ve had your deck since your were a teenager. You used to pull them out at sleepovers and giggle over the meanings you would read in the little booklet that came in the box. It was all fun and games, but there was a part of you that knew that there was much more to these mysterious and ancient cards, but you could never quite put your finger on it.
Then you put them in a junk drawer for ten years.
Once in awhile you would remember they were there and take them out, dust them off, and maybe even shuffle them. You may have even done a little three card spread and looked up the meanings in a book.
And it was pretty bang on. But still, there seemed to be a key missing.
I get it. This was me too! I knew that “reading” the cards was not the same as “reading” the meanings in a book card by card. Oh sure, there was always that audible gasp like, “Holy crap! Yes! That is ME!” But I never really felt like I was using tarot cards in the way I knew they could be used. So, I started to dive deeper and began to really study, and do readings for myself every single day. For years.
And then it started happening.
The cards started to “speak to me”. I know, f-ing nuts, right? But it’s true! After twenty years of reading tarot I can safely say that I have developed some unique ways of learning the cards and how to actually read a spread… without using a book. And you can too!

Here’s the thing, we have already covered how our inner and outer worlds are so damn noisy now-a-days that we can no longer access our inner voice easily making decisions even harder and more stressful to make, so what would be the benefit of learning to read tarot cards for yourself, rather than hire a professional reader?
- You can do readings for yourself any old time you like. Imagine when you are ruminating over a big decision in your life, and you have been thinking about it for awhile, and people keep telling you to listen to your gut, but anytime you try to do that all you hear are “crickets”, right? I have been there, and still go there on a regular basis! Well, instead of paying for a session from a pro, like myself, there might be times when you just want a quick answer, or a nudge from your intuitive self right then and there. Being able to interpret the cards for yourself affords you the convenience of having your own personal guru at your fingertips. But, Lisa, you say, aren’t you just talking yourself out of a job? Ahhh… not really. There will always be times when even a professional reader might consult a more seasoned tarot reader for a fresh eyeball on their spread. And given that it takes years to really get savvy at reading the cards, it is likely that people will always hire readers for the big questions in life. Then there are those folks that have no interest in learning to read the cards and would just like to have a reader do it for them. So, no, I’m not worried about that!
- Fine tuning your own intuitive powers. After learning to use a tool like the tarot, or iChing, or tea leaves, or whatever tool floats your boat, your intuitive muscles get much stronger. It’s actually pretty amazing when this starts to happen. Suddenly when you have that hunch or gut feeling, you stop dead in your tracks and tend to trust it more. This is key, trusting your inner voice is truly even more important than not being able to hear it more often. What good is hearing it if you are going to ignore it anyway? I have done this myself. A couple of years ago I thought I wanted to be a life coach. The work suited my personality and I love helping people, plus I have an utter fascination with human nature, and how the human mind works. I registered for course after course only to have this weird physical sensation literally in the center of my gut every time I uttered the words “Life Coach”. It was the most uncomfortable roller coaster I have been on in a looooong time. I registered and canceled several life coach programs, and my poor husband was ready to tear his hair out with my back and forth endless ruminations. I just could not trust that literal gut feeling whenever I said those two words. ANYway, I finally had to acquiesce and drop all ideas of becoming a life coach. And you know what? The feeling stopped. The anxiety stopped. And this was my first real step in recent years of honouring that inner wisdom. Not long after that, I touched my toe in the waters of becoming a professional tarot reader, and low and behold this seemed to effortlessly unfold in front of me. Though it required work, lots of work initially especially, what I mean by “effortless” is that I felt very little inner or outer resistance to moving down this path. Now that I have a more disciplined practice of reading tarot for myself, I am finding I don’t need to consult them as often. How cool is that?
- Less stress more ease in your daily life. Once you start a practice that exercises your intuitive muscles and you start to trust your inner voice again, suddenly life does not seem that overwhelming. That being said, tarot is not a religion nor is it specifically a spiritual practice for most people, so it can fit beautifully alongside any other spiritual practice or beliefs you have in your life. Yes, even some christians use tarot cards! GASP! I use them as a PSYCHOLOGICAL tool solely for accessing my subconscious/intuitive mind to uncover my hidden motivations and deep desires I would like as an outcome. You know how you can flip a coin when making a decision? Well, I do this with people sometimes, you flip the coin and it lands and you cover it with your hand. Before you reveal which side if up you say, “Now, which side do you REALLY want to be showing?” And it is amazing that 9 out of 10 people will have an answer! See? They knew their choice all along, they just wanted validation! Tarot cards are very much like that. You already know the answer, and the cards will just validate what you already know. So, if you can have this portable guru, as I said before, at your fingertips, only to get more and more useful with practice, and along with other practices you have in your personal, professional and spiritual life, this will greatly help to alleviate stress in your day to day life and work.
Plus it’s super cool, I’m not gonna even remotely lie about that.
Learning to read tarot cards is not for everybody, but if you have always had a fascination with them, and even dabbled in reading them but never quite felt like you were using them to their true potential, I invite you to join us for the fifth round of my five week online beginning tarot course Dabbler to Diva! Doors are still open but close on September 26th and It will fill up fast so don’t wait!

What if I told you that your intuition was largely powered by your “other” brain that resides elsewhere in your body?
You’d think I was nuts. Right?
Before we get into that, though, let’s talk about intuition and what we know about it thus far. It is innate, in other words we all naturally have it. Some people are more “tapped in” than others. It can save your life, or the life of a loved one. It can cost or make you money. It is very mysterious, and seems to have a mind of its own.
When I sat down to write this post, I consulted my co-pilot – my tarot deck – on what the central message was about intuition that I should convey. And the card I drew was this one:
Now, without even knowing anything about tarot cards, you can probably tell that in this card the figure has a lot of choices to make. And he probably is not having an easy time making this decision, you know with the stormy clouds and such. His choices are symbolic, but probably have deep meaning to him. Like the castle mountain one, or the dragon one, or the jewel one. And that weird-ass glowing ghost one – what?
Anyway, the message that was clear to me when I drew this card was that your intuition is most at play when you have a decision to make. Any decision. Even as simple as turning left or right while driving. Or the big ones like quitting your job or moving to another country. So, how can we cultivate this skill? By tapping into it more regularly while making decisions.
For example, I have a feeling that if I asked you to pick a card, any card, from my deck, that would most help you right now, you would pick the exact card that is right FOR YOU. Right?
Trust me. You would.
But how do I know that? Well, there is oodles of research out there about your “other brain”. Thaaaat’s right. You have a whole other nifty set of neurons just churning away inside you communicating in a non-verbal way 24/7! HOW FRIGGEN COOL IS THAT?
To just get all science-y for a second, this amazing second brain is called the Enteric Nervous System and it is located in… you guessed it… your gut.
So, when you say you have a gut feeling about something and go with it, you are tapping into this powerhouse of a neural network that is thinking on a whole other level, and has access to stuff you could never ever uncover in a million and a half years with your conscious mind! I’m not making this up! You can read more about this amazing system here.
So what does that mean FOR YOU, because that’s why you’re here, and I want to help you to live LARGE.
Your ENS (look at me using acronyms!) has no verbal centre, and therefore cannot communicate with your main brain in any way that your main brain can process it and communicate it to you. Often times you will not be able to explain a decision that on the outside world looks like the stupidest move E-V-E-R, and we’ve all had those, amiright? Right?! Or maybe that’s just me. (cough) Either way, you make these gut decisions based on the information that your gut feeling is telling you, and if someone looked at you and said, “Um…. WHY?” You probably would say something like, “I have no idea, I just have to. I just know.” And you go with it, and it works out.
So, how can you cultivate this inner mojo, this Smartypants of Awesomeness more in your life.
Well, you can meditate (big shocker). Meditation is scientifically proven to quiet your busy over-thinking brain so that you can actually “hear” your intuition guide you to the next move in your life. Getting creative, as in music or art, this opens wide your intuitive mind to your conscious mind. Listening to your body. This one is huge. For me learning to really “listen” to my body signals, especially when I had a decision to make, has been one of the best ways of becoming more and more intuitive over time. Your gut is constantly talking to you, and it turns out in study after study it is almost always right! Research at the Leeds University Business School in 2008 had some fascinating findings, you can read all about them here. The key here is to try to avoid over-thinking everything.
You can use the tarot to exercise your intuitive muscles too!
Let’s try it right now, below are three cards, you can see the images, because I am trying to get you to let go of thinking too much, and just “listening” to your Inner Guru. Look at the cards, gaze over them, don’t think about which card is the card you should pick right now, today, in your life. Just allow your gut brain (how romantic!) to take it all in and “tell” you with a feeling that YES, that is THE CARD. Then when you are ready, scroll down to get the meaning of your card. I bet dollars to donuts that this card will be the exact perfect card that you needed in your life TODAY.
And you can thank your guts for that!
Of course there is some magical woo-woo that happens along with this process, there is no denying that, but I just think it is incredible that we have at our disposal this amazingly powerful tool of intuitive intelligence right at our fingertips!
So ready? K, go!
Scroll down for the meaning of your card!
CARD MEANINGS:
The Knight of Swords:
Blaze those trails! Just look at this guy! He is bravely forging ahead a top his mighty steed to face whatever is ahead with bravery and courage. He is well prepared for battle, and he is armed with truth and cutting through the B.S. right to the heart of the situation. The thing with the Knight, though, is sometimes they are so full of passion while on their mission, that they can be a bit cutting with their words, and not think of someone else’s feelings. Even though what they are speaking is true, and probably for the better good of all involved. Knights are fighting for justice, and they always return after their quest with great stories of their adventures. Be brave at this time, be bold, state your truth, just make sure you watch that your edges are not too sharp.
The Sun:
Just look at that cute little toddler on the back of this lovely white horse, with the sun shining down brightly. Flowers and sunshine, this card just exudes happiness! You are in a very good place today, you feel as though your optimism is well deserved, and others are drawn to you for your positive and lovely outlook. The Sun is all about feeling that inner confidence and you are well on your way to achieving your goals. It is also about shining your beautiful light on others in your life, and they will bask in your warm glow. Ever hear that song “This Little Light of Mine”? This song is yours today. What a lovely card to get today!
The Tower:
Huh. I have this sneaking suspicion that there are NOT too many of you that picked this one! If you ARE reading this and did pick this card, good for you! The Tower, though scary looking, is an excellent card to get when you are ready for a BIG shift in your life. We’re talking HUGE. This is not for namby-pambies, this is big time change, that happens very very quickly and usually seems catastrophic at the time. Okay, so maybe there is a bit of anxiety that is warranted here, but not much! The thing is, you can handle this event. You totally can! The Tower comes up when something outside of your control will be bringing a big change in a rapid way, but this change is almost always necessary. Are you hearing me? It will likely be GOOD for you! I am not going to say that with 100% certainty, because I am not a magician, but usually the change although sudden and hugely startling, will lead to important shifts that needed to happen anyway. It is good to have a bit of a foreshadowing of tower, because then you can “brace yourself” and not be as caught off guard when this change comes your way.
Well? How did you gut brain and intuition do picking your card for today? Good? Not so good? Fair to midlin? Share in the comments, I would love to hear from you!
Keep practicing ways to open up the channel to your own Inner Guru, your intuition and “other brain” are there to change your life in powerful ways!
