Your brain is stupid, your intuition is not. Why getting a tarot reading could be the smartest thing you ever do.

Your brain is stupid, your intuition is not. Why getting a tarot reading could be the smartest thing you ever do.

Good lord my brain is dumb.  Listen, I’m not saying I am all stupid and stuff, but I cannot TELL you how many times my mighty intuitive self is literally screaming eternal wisdom at me, and my stupid brain overrides these directions and leads me astray.

Way astray.

Like, cray astray.

Let me give you an example.  About ten years ago, I started looking for another career that was related to the career I have had for twenty years in the film business.  The hours were so long and I had a small daughter, and my husband being in the biz and made a LOT more money than me, I realized I needed to find something else, less hours, and more flexibility.  I was on a commercial with all of these little wee puppies and started talking to this friend of mine who happened to be the animal trainer on set that day.

ME:  Hey, I think I might like to do this, work with animals.

HER:  Yeah, you’d be great at that!  We should talk about that!

CUT TO:  SEVERAL YEARS LATER AFTER SPENDING $5,000 ON A DOG TRAINING CERTIFICATION AND LAUNCHING A DOG TRAINING BUSINESS

My intuition was virtually shrieking at me throughout my training, even before I hit BUY NOW on the five grand shopping cart, something inside me was yelling: this is not you.

But my brain was all, “Um… yeah.  Makes sense, it’s still the film biz, you can work from home, you can work on set.  WINNING.”

So, I listened to my stupid brain and forged ahead.  Spent another $3,000 on a website, and then about two months after my biz was launched, I freaked out and realized I made a HUGE mistake and closed it down.

And then I hibernated for THREE YEARS.

If I had had a tarot reader available to me, I would have went to them when I was IMG_5260in the considering stage, you know, before I spent a ridiculous amount of money, to get some guidance from my Inner Wisdom, cuz guess what?  When you get a reading from me, this is what happens.  It’s not me saying, “Hey you need to do this, and this, and this, and then this will happen and you will avoid this and this and this…”

Nope.

It’s more like this:  I see this in the cards for this situation, what do YOU see? How does this make you FEEL? (Okay, well, sometimes I DO say, you should do this and this to avoid this and that, but not without the input from your own inner guidance!)

I ask questions, and your intuitive self is all perked up and ready to talk to you, and you know what?

You’ll be ready to listen.

Your brain, though I know you are truly a smartypants, is kinda dumb because it tends to create a lot of NOISE when you are trying to make a decision.  Not only that, there is a REALLY annoying part of your brain called your Inner Critic that will outright sabotage you cuz it’s in fight or flight mode and feels like anything out of the norm is a ferocious creature wanting to rip your throat out.  Even though you just wanna create a new opt in for your website, or buy a cat.  Whatever it is that you want to do that is new for you, it’ll pipe up… it always does.

What tarot does is cuts through all of that noise.  It just bypasses it and your intuition is able to directly communicate to your conscious mind and help you see things clearly, sometimes for the very first time. This can help you avoid a zig when you should have zagged.  It can help you take that leap when all your brain wants you to do is crawl under your covers and take a nap.

I love naps.

Your intuition is your compass, your inner GPS, your inner guru that is ALWAYS there to take you from the A to B of your soul’s journey in this life.  It’s just there, hidden beneath all of the appointments, the soccer practices, the arguing with your hubby or your teenager, your to-do list, or your mother’s “helpful” advice, “So, you think leaving your job is a good idea?”

It cuts through all of that.

Right to the heart of your inner awesomeness.

Trust me.  Once you get your first reading, you will be hooked.  But more importantly, you will have more confidence in your decision making because you will suddenly have a clear communication pathway to your intuitive self.  Sure you can consult your brain, it likes that, but it will work in concert with the most ancient and authentic part of you when making those big decisions in life.

And isn’t that what we all want?  I know I do.

The 3 reasons you might want to learn to read tarot cards

tattooed reader branded largeHere’s the thing, we have already covered how our inner and outer worlds are so damn noisy now-a-days that we can no longer access our inner voice easily making decisions even harder and more stressful to make, so what would be the benefit of learning to read tarot cards for yourself, rather than hire a professional reader?

  1. You can do readings for yourself any old time you like. Imagine when you are ruminating over a big decision in your life, and you have been thinking about it for awhile, and people keep telling you to listen to your gut, but anytime you try to do that all you hear are “crickets”, right?  I have been there, and still go there on a regular basis!  Well, instead of paying for a session from a pro, like myself, there might be times when you just want a quick answer, or a nudge from your intuitive self right then and there. Being able to interpret the cards for yourself affords you the convenience of having your own personal guru at your fingertips.  But, Lisa, you say, aren’t you just talking yourself out of a job? Ahhh… not really.  There will always be times when even a professional reader might consult a more seasoned tarot reader for a fresh eyeball on their spread. And given that it takes years to really get savvy at reading the cards, it is likely that people will always hire readers for the big questions in life.  Then there are those folks that have no interest in learning to read the cards and would just like to have a reader do it for them. So, no, I’m not worried about that!
  2. Fine tuning your own intuitive powers.  After learning to use a tool like the tarot, or iChing, or tea leaves, or whatever tool floats your boat, your intuitive muscles get much stronger.  It’s actually pretty amazing when this starts to happen.  Suddenly when you have that hunch or gut feeling, you stop dead in your tracks and tend to trust it more.  This is key, trusting your inner voice is truly even more important than not being able to hear it more often.  What good is hearing it if you are going to ignore it anyway?  I have done this myself. A couple of years ago I thought I wanted to be a life coach.  The work suited my personality and I love helping people, plus I have an utter fascination with human nature, and how the human mind works.  I registered for course after course only to have this weird physical sensation literally in the center of my gut every time I uttered the words “Life Coach”.  It was the most uncomfortable roller coaster I have been on in a looooong time.  I registered and canceled several life coach programs, and my poor husband was ready to tear his hair out with my back and forth endless ruminations.  I just could not trust that literal gut feeling whenever I said those two words.  ANYway, I finally had to acquiesce and drop all ideas of becoming a life coach.  And you know what? The feeling stopped.  The anxiety stopped.  And this was my first real step in recent years of honouring that inner wisdom.  Not long after that, I touched my toe in the waters of becoming a professional tarot reader, and low and behold this seemed to effortlessly unfold in front of me.  Though it required work, lots of work initially especially, what I mean by “effortless” is that I felt very little inner or outer resistance to moving down this path. Now that I have a more disciplined practice of reading tarot for myself, I am finding I don’t need to consult them as often.  How cool is that?
  3. Less stress more ease in your daily life.  Once you start a practice that exercises your intuitive muscles and you start to trust your inner voice again, suddenly life does not seem that overwhelming.  That being said, tarot is not a religion nor is it specifically a spiritual practice for most people, so it can fit beautifully alongside any other spiritual practice or beliefs you have in your life. Yes, even some christians use tarot cards!  GASP!  I use them as a PSYCHOLOGICAL tool solely for accessing my subconscious/intuitive mind to uncover my hidden motivations and deep desires I would like as an outcome. You know how you can flip a coin when making a decision?  Well, I do this with people sometimes, you flip the coin and it lands and you cover it with your hand. Before you reveal which side if up you say, “Now, which side do you REALLY want to be showing?”  And it is amazing that 9 out of 10 people will have an answer!  See? They knew their choice all along, they just wanted validation!  Tarot cards are very much like that. You already know the answer, and the cards will just validate what you already know. So, if you can have this portable guru, as I said before, at your fingertips, only to get more and more useful with practice, and along with other practices you have in your personal, professional and spiritual life, this will greatly help to alleviate stress in your day to day life and work.

Plus it’s super cool, I’m not gonna even remotely lie about that.

Learning to read tarot cards is not for everybody, but if you have always had a fascination with them, and even dabbled in reading them but never quite felt like you were using them to their true potential, I invite you to join us for the fifth round of my five week online beginning tarot course Dabbler to Diva!  Doors are still open but close on September 26th and It will fill up fast so don’t wait!

How tarot really works.

Tarot has been around for a super long time.  Nobody actually really knows the true history of these mysterious little cards, which just adds to their allure.  What isn’t as mysterious is how they actually work.  In a nutshell, tarot cards have a way of communicating with your subconscious mind by using imagery, and along with a savvy reader they can help to interpret what your subconcsious mind is seeing, you can bust into the vault of inner wisdom that is hidden deep inside that brilliant mind of yours.

Don’t believe me?  Let me show you what I’m talking about.

Let’s say for example that you come to me with a question you would like answered.  “Is it a good idea for my mother-in-law to live with us over the summer?”  Well, before we dive into the cards at all, I would immediately say to you, “Huh.  Well, the fact that you are coming to the tarot with this question, tells me that there is some discomfort around this idea, right?  Something about having your mother-in-law living with your for a few months doesn’t feel right, or you would just say, ‘Come on in, Marjie!”  At his point your subconscious mind has perked up its ears.  Your conscious brain is all, “Oh, yeah, right, well DUH!”  But we are wanting your inner wisdom to answer this question, completely unfiltered by your thinking brain, so we can tap into all the reasons why this may or may not be a good idea for your family.

Now we start pulling cards.  This is where things get really freaky and things are a little harder to explain with logic.  The cards that come up for people around their question are always bang on, and I have THE WORST poker face when I am flipping them over cuz I tend to get very excited and blown away every time the universe brings up cards exactly right for the situation.

But I digress….

So, let’s say the card that comes up is Temperance, you can see it here:

TEMPERANCE

I always show people the cards, and when I point it out or hold it up to the camera for a Skype reading, I start to point out the things that stand out in the card.  As I am doing this and you are looking at the card, there is something else happening that is way cool.  You are not the only one looking out of your eyeballs and scanning the imagery on the card.

No really.

The wisest part of you, and the part of you that is tapped in somehow magically to the collective unconscious is having a field day taking in every detail on this card.  But you know what else this wise part of you is doing?

Trying to get meaning from this image, and within the framework of the question that your conscious brain has put around it.  Your subconscious mind, inner wisdom, inner mentor, intuitive self, is now – at lightening speed – going through the HUGE rolodex deep in your mind around every single to do with your mother-in-law.

Everything.

Every memory, every interaction, every feeling you  ever had about her, every preconceived idea you have about mother-in-laws in general, etc.  It is trying to connect the images with your question and trying to pull meaning out of it for you.

HOW FRIGGEN COOL IS THAT???

But back to your reading….First of all, there is some weird ass shit happening in this card. What’s with the red wings?  And why is his/her head glowing?  A headband with a circle on it?  What?  Sometimes I look at an image and just go, wow, no wonder people have a hard time interpreting cards!  Okay, so here’s how we go about gaining meaning from a card around your question.  So, I might say to you, “Well, what do you see here on this card?” And then I would have you say what you see.  Then I would start pointing some stuff that I think is relevant to answering your question, “What I notice is the cups that the angel is holding.  You see how he/she is pouring water back and forth?  This is him trying to make sure there is balance, trying to make sure that everyone has enough.  And the whole idea of temperance is to “temper” something, so tempering a tendency to be judgemental, or overly analytical, or possessive over your own personal space.”  You see how this is starting to work?

So, you as the client might say something like, “Oh my god, you’re right!  I am feeling super protective of my personal space, I mean we don’t have a lot of room, and she’ll just be there 24/7 and it totally stresses me out!  And not only that, I am also worried about being able to keep everything in balance with the kids and my husband and now her, ugh, yes.  That’s exactly the way I am feeling!”

We would then go through the spread card by card doing the same thing, and then bringing the entire reading together in a cohesive way to provide her with a soulful answer to her question, one that she actually uncovered for herself.  Amazing!

I’m telling you, anyone can do this.  With practice and a bit of knowledge of the general meanings of the cards, you can do this for yourself and others.  Our intuitive self loves using a tool like this to communicate with us.  In our culture, not only are our brains extremely noisy and racing around from thought to thought, our environment is the same. We have so much noise inside and outside of our minds as well, that there is no way our poor inner guru could be heard over this racket!  Using the ancient tool of tarot is just one of the ways we can finally get that amazing part of our own mind and spirit heard.

And it works for business too!  In fact, entrepreneurs LOVE using this tool almost more than anyone else.  You know why?  Because entrepreneurs are always tapping into their intuition, every single moment.  We use our intuition to make decisions that on the outside may look crazy to everyone else especially our spouses, (cough, right honey?), but there is just this deep part of us that just “knows” that the next move is the right move.  But what happens is, when things start to get riskier, and women have a harder time with this than men, by the way, we start to get scared and our inner critic starts to overpower our ability to listen to our inner wisdom, and then the worst thing in the world for an entrepreneur happens…

We start to lose faith in ourselves.

So, what the tarot can do for you and your business is bring you right back to centre.  It can cut through all of the stuff that is churning away in that creative brilliant mind of yours, and get to the heart of the matter around your business and decisions that need to be made.  It can help you to see clearly the next steps in your growth, and most important how you are blocking your way to a thriving business.

I’m not kidding, people, tarot works.

To give a session a whirl is super easy, I do skype sessions, in-person sessions, and yes even sessions by email.  What?  Yes, and that works too!  To book a session with me, or to find out more about how we can work together, I invite you to visit my Work With Me page .

Planner Power and your Big Beautiful Year!

So, basically I have a confession to make.  I am addicted to planners.  There, I said it.  I have probably purchased twenty or more planners in my life, none of which I have ever used.  Oh, I get all excited for the first few days, maybe weeks, and put stuff down in it, but then it gets tossed aside like some lonely little toy, and is never seen again.  Well, until I come across it a year or two later when I feel that familiar tug of, “I’m such a loser. I planned nothing.”

Well, this year is different.  Different I tell you!  Not only did I ACTUALLY find a planner that I LOVE and I actually USE, I took this great little five day freebie thing called the Planathon by Amber McCue, and it got me all hot and bothered about planning.

Then I started thinking.  Since I am a tarot reader and it’s like, you know, my business, how could I use my beloved deck in helping me to plan for my life and business in 2015?  Well, it turns out I totally can, and now I can share that with you!

WINNING!

So, what are some of the ways we can use tarot cards to plan our year ahead.  Well, you can do a 12 months spread, for each month you place a card in position and use it as a forecast of the energetics of that month.  For example:  I just grabbed my deck and picked a card for January.  This card captures the energetics of this upcoming up month for me, and I was very please to see this card:

JUDGEMENT

What does this card mean for me in the immediate new year?  Well, it means that I will be stepping into my calling, and that I will be experiencing a time of reflection and self evaluation.  It also means that i will open myself out more fully to a completely new way of being in my life, and that I will be doing work that not only is personally fulfilling to me, but helps and inspires others along the way.

Pretty awesome little card for January!

Now I will repeat this for each month for the next twelve, and I am going to make note of each card and the meaning for me right in the margin of my planner.  That way, I can use the cards and the energetics they carry as guideposts for 2015!  These will not replace my daily card practice, those will be the up-to-date energy for that day, which can be affected by all sorts of things that can happen between now and then.

Why don’t you grab your fav deck and pull a card right now for January?  Go ahead, I’ll wait.

So, did you?  Share in the comments what your card was!  If you know what this card means for you, let us know, and if you have no idea, that’s okay!  We can offer up some interpretations for you.

The other way you can use tarot for preparing for 2015 is by using a New Years Spread.  These are very popular, and they are a great way to shed the old and bring in the new.

One of my most favourite traditions in my family, is immediately after midnight on New Years Eve, we run upstairs and open the back door to say “Goodbye!” to the previous year, and then we run to the front door and say, “Welcome!” to the new year.  It is actually quite emotional, as another year of our lives has gone by, and the new year coming is so full of promise and hope.  And in the spirit of this tradition…

Here is a spread I created just for you!  You can download it right here.  The basics of this spread are to identify what you need to let go of for 2014, and also what you are most excited about for this upcoming year.

And if you do not want to do the spread for yourself, I am offering a 2015 Your Big Beautiful Year readings, and you can book them right here!

tarot for yourselfAnd as things are winding down for 2014, I invite you to use your tarot cards for some deep self reflection and personal development.  It is such a powerful yet beautiful tool to dive deeply into your own life and feelings.  One of the best resources for this type of work is a workbook called Tarot For Yourself by tarot matriarch Mary Greer.

And in case you missed it, I will be launching something very yummy in the new year myself!  I am launching my very first ever online beginners tarot course called Dabbler to Diva, and if you would like to be invited to participate in this beta round of this class, not only will you get a steep discount, but you will also receive lifetime access to this training, as well as lifetime access to the private Facebook group!  And as an added bonus, you will get a discount on level 2 when it rolls out sometime in fall of 2015!

Test Drive Tuesday! Putting you in the drivers seat.

TEST DRIVE TUESDAY FINAL

Soooo, today is Tuesday, and I am bringing in a new fun feature to Tarot Solutions.  Basically, I love creating brand spanking new spreads.  It’s super satisfying to find an issue that folks, including me, are having, and then creating a spread around said issue.  On the occasional Tuesday, I’m going to throw one of these babies up here for you all to test drive!  You do not need to be an experienced reader to do this…. seriously.  No, really!  You just need to have an interest in tarot and a book of meanings (or even the little booklet that came with your deck!) by your side, and give this reading a whirl!

This Tuesday’s original spread was inspired by a topic that comes up for EVERYbody.  Especially this time of year.  The topic is MONEY.  Dough.  Cashola. The all mighty dollah.

Even if you have a super healthy and abundant relationship with money, and if you DO, well… we all silently want to punch you, but WHATEVER!  You too, can gain a lot from this spread.

So, grab your deck, and do the spread, which you can find right here, and then come back in the comments or pipe up on Facebook to let us know how your test drive went!  Was it a smooth ride?  A bumpy adventure?  I am loving any kind of feedback on what worked for you and what sucked.  You can tell me!  And based on your awesome feedback I can tweak this puppy to perfection.

Your spread to Test Drive today is called “Your Money Mirror”.  You can download and print it out here.    All for FREE, yo.

When not to panic during a reading

Okay, we’ve all been there, you’re sitting at the cloth covered table and your tarot reader begins to flip the cards over and you’re all, “Please don’t be the death card.  Please don’t be the death card. Please don’t be the death card.”

Amiright?

Here’s the thing, the deal, the skizzy.  There are no bad cards in tarot.

There, I said it.  It’s done.

Even though some cards may LOOK bad.  Like really really bad.  Oh, like say, this one:

10 OF S

They’re really not “bad”.  They are giving you a message.  For example, the above 10 of Swords actually makes me kind of laugh when I see it.

Stay with me here.

Whenever I see this card come up in a reading for myself or others, it usually means someone is being a bit of a…. eh hem… Drama Queen.  Basically, imagine a little bubble floating above this guy’s head that says, “Oh, don’t worry about me, I’m FINE.”

Now, let’s really look at this card for a second.  Yes, this poor guy has ten – count ’em T-E-N – swords plunged into his back and pinning him to the ground.  I mean, OUCH, right?  And in the background there are some storm clouds and stuff, also not too perky.  But there is something so ridiculously exaggerated about this scene, that it is just over-the-top with the drama.  Not to mention that beyond the clouds the sun is coming up.  There will be another day of sun.

Every single time this card has come up in a reading and I say, “Someone, and it could be you, is being a martyr around this situation.  A bit of a Drama Queen.”  The querent pretty much falls off their chair with, “Holy shit balls, you are RIGHT!”  And then we can talk about who it is, and if it is them, well then they can have some self awareness around their attitude, or passive aggressive stance over the situation asked about, and usually it ends up as a pretty big laugh all around.

No really.  Actual laughing.

And then there’s the classic and almost always dreaded Death Card:

DEATH

I mean look at him  up there, the Grim Reaper, and his horse is trampling some poor guy!  And there’s a kid watching it all for god’s sake!  Brutal.

Or is it?

The only people that don’t freak out whenever this card comes up are usually either fellow tarot readers, or people who have an understanding of the tarot.

Well, I’m here to put this to rest in your mind once and for all.

Death is good.  At least most of the time.  I’m not saying it never indicates an actual death, and because I am not a predictive reader I wouldn’t be able to tell you that anyway, unless it is about a death that has already happened.  But usually when this card comes up it means that there was, is, or may be a deeply transformative change coming your way.

Like huge.

But not the catastrophic kind of change like The Tower, just check this baby out:

THE TOWER

Seriously, YIKES!  But we’ll get to this one in a minute.

Death is more like the kind of change that comes once in a life time, and the “bad” part is, it is usually not the easy peasy lemon squeezy kind of change.  Sometimes it’s when you are finding yourself needing to re-examine who you are at the deepest level, like when an identity crisis hits.  Or when you have to say goodbye to a loved one for whatever reason, and you must make that deep change where you move forward without them in your life.  Are you following me here?  It is a transformation, and then you become something else as a result.  Shedding an old belief, or way of life, or environment.  Getting rid of something, having it die, to make room for something new.

In fact, The Death card in the Shadowscapes deck is represented by a Phoenix.  Whenever Death comes up for people, I always use the Phoenix as the energy behind it.  Which is why I love this version of Death so much.

SS death

Now, if the Shadowscapes version of Death came up, people would probably think it is beautiful, and inspiring. So, even though the Rider Waite deck, which is what I and many readers use in readings, looks scarier, the messages are still meant to help – not terrify.

Speaking of terror, the final card we’ll look at is The Tower, pictured above.  It kind of looks like there is really nothing positive in this card at all, and occasionally when it comes up it does speak to things being kind of brutal, in a swift explosive way, but each of the tarot cards that appear as “bad” are meant to help you transform or heal in some way.  This one just does it by telling you that the universe is going to kick you in the ass to get your attention. Sometimes it might indicate a sudden job loss, or a sudden break up in a relationship, or sudden devastating circumstance that explodes into your life.  Do you see the energy that keeps coming through?

Sudden, explosive, unavoidable event.

BUT, here’s the good news!  It is usually something that will, in the long run, be good for you.  It’s true!  I usually explain to people, like the Death card, when it is happening to you it feels like garbage, not pleasant, and even hard, really really hard, but let’s face it… deep life changing transformation is going to be hard.  If it wasn’t, than we would just call it switching gears, or changing direction.

Nope.  These cards are all speaking to the times in our lives that we survive from.  And we DO survive.  And like a gorgeous tree that is being battered by the winds and the rain, the roots and branches become stronger and stronger, and every year that tree grows more and more majestic and solid in the ground.

You will know more about who you are.  And why you came to be here on this planet.

I’ll help you through it.

No fear.

You’ve got this.
